Interview with FanDuel WFBC Runner-up, John "igotnochance" Quick

Publish date: 2024-06-15

He was probably overlooked by his competitors – not ranked in the top 1,000 of the RotoGrinders rankings while making his first live final appearance, not to mention all the top names taking part in the FanDuel World Fantasy Baseball Championship.

By the time it was all over though, the majority of them sans one were looking up at him as he took second place and was $143,000 richer (read all about it here at our FanDuel WFBC Recap). He goes by the name igotnochance and proudly has a RotoGrinders logo attached to his FanDuel screenname.

We took a few moments to talk with him earlier this week after his great finish.

RotoGrinders: First, congratulations on the great finish! Tell us a little bit about yourself if you don’t mind.

igotnochance: Thanks! My name is John Quick and I was born in Kankakee, Illinois. I live now in St. Anne, Illinois. I’ve been married for 22 years to my wife Tonja and we have three children and three small but, highly dangerous dogs.

RotoGrinders: How long have you been playing DFS and what was your introduction to this game we all love so much? Tell us about your first experiences playing DFS?

John Quick: Like most people, I’ve played fantasy football for a long time. When I started seeing commercials for FanDuel and DraftKings, I knew exactly what they were but for some reason I kept putting off checking them out. About 2 years ago I saw a link to FanDuel so I clicked on it and signed up. There was no premeditation to this so I didn’t really have time to think of a cool username and so I just went with what I was thinking my chances were at the time. Anyway, I was hooked immediately and have played just about every day since then.

RotoGrinders: What is your favorite sport to play DFS in and why?

John Quick: I am older than most playing so I understand why football is the most popular sport but it wasn’t always that way. I grew up in a baseball era and that has remained my favorite sport to spend time doing research on and quite frankly to watch. Now I will play a lot of football and my wife puts in lineups during football season and I play NBA and a little bit of golf but that is about it.

RotoGrinders: What sport are you most profitable in and why do you think you do well in it?

John Quick: I’ve done well in the NBA surprisingly but after Sunday obviously baseball is where the money got made. I wanted a seat in the finals very badly and I probably spent more money than my wife would appreciate to do it. I mean those qualifiers are not necessarily the smartest place to put your money but I’m proof that one lightning strike is possible.

RotoGrinders: So tell us about a sport you struggle with and why you think you have problems with it.

John Quick: I’ll keep this one short. I don’t mess with any sports I don’t know much about or care to watch. I will tell you when I play DFS golf it almost always based on recommendations from one or more of your great players here at RotoGrinders. The sport that baffles me the most is football – I have done okay but just never can seem to gain the same traction as I can in baseball or basketball. I feel like I know what the hell I’m doing but I’m starting to wonder.

RotoGrinders: Tell me a little bit about your daily process and what you do in regards to DFS preparation.

John Quick: There is no typical day for me, I am not a professional at this. I work for BASF usually 45-60 hours per week and it’s a swing-shift. I also own a bar called “Mac and Frankies” in Bradley, Illinois (was that a plug??). Everyday is different depending on my shift or if I’m off or more to the point what the wife deems important that day. I have a pretty good knowledge early of what matchups I want to look into and stuff like that. Then when I get a chance I will do a little reading here at RotoGrinders (another plug!!!). Most times it just confirms what I’m already thinking but sometimes I run into some information I hadn’t thought of. So basically I play a lot more on days when I feel like I’ve turned over every stone

RotoGrinders: You just took 2nd in the FanDuel live final for a six-figure score – was this your biggest score? What was your biggest score prior to that and how did that one feel? How did this 2nd place feel and what did you do after? What do you plan to do with the money you won this past weekend?

John Quick: This is easily my biggest score by far. I’ve had some smaller scores but you know how they usually end – late at night when the games finish, your half drunk and the wife’s sleeping so your high fiving imaginary people. The live final was a little different being around everybody, near the end my wife asked me why was I so calm and I pointed around the room at people having a bad day and said I didn’t want to be a jerk. I don’t have any big plans for the money but I really need a new roof so other than that I’ll just try to make sure I don’t give it all back on FanDuel before NFL starts.

RotoGrinders: In terms of your research process what resources do you utilize? Do you utilize any other analysis or solely rely on your own?

John Quick: I guess I’ve kind of answered this already but I’ll admit I don’t have my own model yet. I’ll say it again, the people you have at RotoGrinders are top notch but I still like to form most of my own ideas. That said, I’ll run some stuff through your lineup builder at times. I like to start with pitching and Dave Potts breaks that down as good as anyone. Then I decide if it’s a night for stacking or just playing randomly. On nights when I can’t get comfortable I’ll just make one lineup and put it in several games. If I think I got a good feel for it will make as many lineups as I can to cover all of my stupid thoughts. Last night, I had 150 lineups – didn’t work ha ha… next question.

RotoGrinders: Our own Dan Back was there hosting the event and told us a story about you having a heart attack between qualifying and the live final. Tell us about that whole experience and the role it played in this past weekend for you.

John Quick: Oh… the heart attack. Well let me just say what they consider a heart attack is painted with a wide brush. I experienced some tightness in my chest, shoulders, and jaw that lasted for a couple of days so I actually snuck to the hospital to get an attack ruled out so my wife or kids wouldn’t worry. That didn’t work as before I knew it I was on an operating table getting a stint shoved up my arm, which by the way is better than going up the crotch I’m told. I was out of the hospital the next day and back to work in six days. I feel fine now and I haven’t had a cigarette since that day. All of this was another reason I needed to remain calm Sunday.

RotoGrinders: Thanks John for answering some questions for us and congrats again on your 2nd place finish and six-figure payday!
