New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr exited his team’s 33-28 loss against the Detroit Lions on Sunday after taking a hard hit from Lions defensive end Bruce Irvin in the fourth quarter. Carr was evaluated for a concussion as well as back and shoulder injuries, per the Fox broadcast.

He had 226 yards passing, a touchdown and an interception before leaving the game. Jameis Winston checked in at QB and was able to help the Saints finish a drive with a 1-yard Alvin Kamara touchdown run. He also completed two passes for 41 yards.

A tough day for Carr

Carr has faced all kinds of heat from opposing pass rushers this season, as well as from a displeased fanbase. Sunday was no different.

Fans in the Caesars Superdome booed the Saints’ starting quarterback during pregame warmups. They booed after he threw an interception on his first attempt, even though it wasn’t Carr’s fault as a short pass skipped through Juwan Johnson’s hands. Michael Thomas even pointed, via social media, to an open receiver on the play that Carr missed. The Saints didn’t do Carr any favors, either, because the fans would cheer when Taysom Hill would come in for QB snaps and boo when Carr re-entered the game.

But Carr did have 15 consecutive completions before exiting with the injury. And the crowd cheered, respectfully, when Carr left the game.

Carr has already dealt with shoulder and concussion issues this season. So there should be some real concern with Carr’s health moving forward. — Larry Holder, NFL senior writer
